The Bearded Plantaholic: A man with a beard, love of plants and a sense of humor
A Bearded Beginning
Every plant parent has that moment when one leafy friend somehow turns into ten, then fifty… then an entire rainforest. For Jonny, better known as The Bearded Plantaholic, that moment spiraled into a way of life.
“I’m bearded, I have a big heart, and an even bigger passion for all things green.”
And so, a jungle was born—indoors.
Plants, Propagations, and Playfulness
Jonny doesn’t just grow plants; he grows joy. His social feeds are brimming with lush foliage, witty reels, and sarcastic captions that prove houseplant care doesn’t need to be stiff or serious.
“If you’re not laughing while misting your plants, you’re doing it wrong.”
From propagating rare specimens to poking fun at the drama of plant parenthood, Jonny makes monstera fenestrations and ficus meltdowns feel like punchlines.
Making History at RHS Malvern Spring Festival 2025
In 2025, something remarkable happened at the RHS Malvern Spring Festival. For the first time ever, indoor gardens were welcomed into the show—and Jonny jumped at the chance to bring his leafy vision to life. Teaming up with his jungle brotherMo and the master crafters at Cotswold Oak Products, they set out to create a garden unlike anything Malvern had seen before.
The Sensory Sanctuary
Their creation, named The Sensory Sanctuary, wasn’t just a display of plants—it was an immersive experience. Picture a cocoon of greenery filled with natural textures, calming scents, dappled light, and flowing foliage, all carefully designed to soothe visitors and remind them of the peace that nature can bring. It was less “garden” and more “embrace”—a space where people could slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect with themselves.
Building a Jungle in Record Time
The road to Malvern was as ambitious as the concept itself. Jonny and the team dreamed it, built it, dismantled it, and then rebuilt it at the festival—all in the space of a single week. With sawdust in their hair and soil under their fingernails, they pieced together their leafy sanctuary with sheer determination and a little bit of madness.
When the final plant was placed and the lights switched on, the team stood back in awe. It was bold. It was different. It was theirs.
Recognition and a Silver Medal
The RHS judges thought so too, awarding The Sensory Sanctuary a Silver Medal—a huge achievement for a first-of-its-kind indoor show garden.
Sure, Jonny admits a little gold-lust was in the air, but the pride of creating something so groundbreaking outweighed the sting. More than just a medal, the project marked a milestone: proof that houseplants can take centre stage at one of the UK’s most respected gardening shows.
And for Jonny? That Silver is just the beginning.
“We’ve planted the seed—next time, we’re coming back for gold.”
A Heart Behind the Humor
While the jokes land and the leaves grow, there’s also a gentleness at the core of The Bearded Plantaholic. Every propagated cutting he sells is nurtured with care, carefully packaged, and often sent with the help of his wife, Charlotte. Each one is a little piece of the jungle, ready to brighten another home.
“Plants connect us—to nature, to each other, and sometimes even to ourselves.”
You’re Overwatering It! – Coming February 2026
As if juggling jungles and cracking jokes wasn’t enough, Jonny has a book on the way.
You’re Overwatering It!: A Plant Guru’s Guide to Houseplants will be released on February 24, 2026.
The book promises equal parts wisdom and wit—teaching readers how to keep their plants alive without losing their sense of humor. Expect practical advice, relatable plant-parent fails, and Jonny’s trademark sarcasm.
“Because sometimes the best way to learn about plants is to laugh through the disasters.”
